People are not born with leadership skills, they are they are carved and molded over time. The leader takes complete ownership of the mistake and all of its repercussions, even if it was one of his subordinates or employees who performed poorly. The leader does not shift blame or responsibility onto others when things do not go as planned. A true leader takes responsibility for all actions of his subordinates. In the work place, being a leader can be a very challenging task. Supervising and leading employees is the same thing. Failed leaders have attempted to be friends or buddies with their employees. This is a sign of weakness. If you intend to lead or supervise a group of individuals, you must be friendly by default, but stern as soon as unfavorable behavior or mistakes are made. Like the drop of a hat a leader doesn’t matter resume expert or not must turn from friendly to extremely critical when a subordinate is not doing their job correctly. This is the secret to gaining respect from your employees. You must be understanding and kind, but as a good leader you must also be quick to discipline when someone gets out of line. Body language is very important to control when you are in a leadership position. Do not lower your chin at your employees because it communicates that you are looking up at them and they are to be looking down at you. Keep your shoulders back and do not slouch. This communicates confidence in your ability to lead as well as your dominance in the group. Maintain continuous eye contact as looking away will convey a lack of willpower. Keep feet positioned at least shoulder width apart to display that you are secure in your position and that you are the law. Mainly be confident in your movements and gestures to remind employees that you are not their babysitter, their student, their buddy, or their enemy. Don’t be afraid to laugh and have a good time but always display a confident body posture. Disciplining individuals instantly is just as important as rewarding them instantly. Verbal recognition, pizza parties, barbeques are all rewards goals that can be set. It is very important to always set high standard goals for your employees. Never have any period of time go by when there are no goals to accomplish. Set the goals high enough for them to be a rigorous challenge, but low enough to possibly achieve. It is in human nature to work toward goals even if they may not seem spectacular.
